Suicide -an act of cowardice?... Think before you comment!

Friends, we all keep hearing about people committing suicide for some reason or the other. My friend, Deepti, committed suicide because she could not pass an examination. In the newspaper, very recently, I read about a girl who committed suicide after being raped. A neighbor committed the act because he was deceived in love. Usha Rani, a housewife committed it because she could not bear the social isolation on being widowed. Rohan committed it because he did not get a proper job. Anil committed …..I guess I’ve got to stop there, as my list of people who committed suicide and their reasons for doing so will never end.

How many times don’t we come across such information and discard it as another act of cowardice? True, suicide may be a way of escaping hardships and done by a person who does not have the guts to face the world, survive through all the difficulties and emerge a winner. But I would like to remind you friends, that NOBODY IN THIS WORLD REALLY WANTS TO DIE. Human beings, like all the other living beings of this world, love themselves and their existence more than anything else. When a small injury can hurt a lot, how can someone embrace death without having the courage to suffer the experience? It takes immense courage, to end your own life.

Before calling someone a coward for ending his life, we need to consider all the reasons that might drive a person to be so very cruel to his own self. In India, maybe in some other countries also, many girls who are raped end their lives. Do you know why? -Because they are socially ostracized and insulted to death. A student who fails in an examination is made fun of his friends, teachers and relatives till he hangs himself to death. We, as the society do everything to demean a person and then we expect him/her to have superhuman courage to overcome all the insult and survive in this world. We forget that many of us are just ordinary human beings with all the imperfections that are so very characteristic of a human being and there is nothing wrong with that. We expect a person who is already plagued with problems to exhibit extraordinary courage and survive in this world to take more brickbats.

Why can’t we be kinder to people who do not succeed in life? Why do we make their lives hell-like by insulting them and then expect them to live? If society would not have induced a feeling of shame with failure in life, there would have been far less suicides in this world. How many of us go up to a person who seems to be a looser in life and encourage him to come up instead? Instead we make fun of him and show our superiority. A person, on the verge of committing suicide, needs emotional support from the society. How many of us are ready to give that? Unfortunately, this remains the job of a handful of psychological counselors. And sadly, only a few can get timely psychological help. Others just go out of this world before any help comes their way, thinking that they are worthless.

Without considering all this and many other factors, we call someone a coward. It is easy for us to label someone so-till we suffer the same kind of an ordeal!

Every time I read about suicide, I think, ”What died?” To me, we are not the body, not the mind. The word, suicide, in fact is an oxymoron. The Latin roots describe the word, suicide, as death of the soul.

Hmmmm, I’m not so sure.

The word IS from Latin, (suicidium, from sui caedere) and in many dictionaries it has two meanings. It does mean to kill oneself physically, but it also means something like ”the deliberate elimination of what is good for one”, or ”the conscious destruction of one’s well-being” depending on the dictionary used. There’s nothing definitive in what I write here, but I really don’t think though that ”death of the soul” is a generally accepted ”correct” definition of suicide.

It would be interesting to hear why you used the word ”oxymoron” to describe suicide. ”Oxymoron” is from the greek ”oxy” - sharp, and ”moros” - blunt or dull.

In other words an oxymoron is a kind of contradiction in terms......Ummmmm

Hello Dennis, that’s a very interesting perspective that you’ve presented here by saying that suicide as the death of the soul. But it is said that the soul is immortal. So I would like to think that suicide is the death of one’s conscience-one’s values and there are so many of us like that in this world. A person without compassion and respect for human life is as good as a dead person.

Hi Leena!

”Why can’t we be kinder to people who do not succeed in life?”

VERY interesting question. Complex too.

I think it may have to do with people being out of phase with who they should/could be.

I mean, those who don’t care for the feelings of others are really in denial of their feelings for themselves, or else they would be more considerate.

Anyone who is balanced, intellectually and spiritually, feels compassion automatically for those in need. It’s truly ”natural”.

Yes, and that does mean unfortunately that there are a lot of people out there who have no idea of their OWN pain, never mind that of others...

Super post as usual my friend!!!

Hi Denis ,

I do not want to be mean, but ”oxymoron = contradiction in term(s)” is not english, and it is categorically incorrect.

You told me recently that your english is rusty. Well, you’re right.

”What distinguishes oxymorons from other paradoxes and contradictions is that they are used intentionally, for rhetorical effect, and what distinguishes oxymorons from paradoxes and contradictions is that they are used intentionally, for rhetorical effect, and THE CONTRADICTION IS ONLY APPARENT, as the combination of terms provides a novel expression of some concept, such as ”cruel to be kind” or ”team of mavericks”.

That’s just Wiki, but other explanations abound. Go see.

Denis, please verify your stuff.

(Moreover, Leena is a very gentle person and does not need, I’m sure, to read all this ”I’m right so I win” stuff here. Please email me if you have any more to say about oxymorons....)

Seeya!

”Hello Michael, I am sure Leena is a very gentle person and you are very gallant to protect her from my degraded language skills”

Ambivalent and sybellin phrase.

I hope that expresses humour and not sarcasm.

If it expresses humour it’s (almost) funny.

But if it expresses sarcasm, it’s in extremely bad taste......so I think it would be no less than honest of you to say which is the case.

Dearest Micah, astride the white stallion, defender of depressed and distressed damsels. Do you ever get off the white horse to piss? How do you get it on the number 16 bus? or, is the number 16 bus the white stallion? Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 10:08:58 PM, you wrote: >

Hi Michael...I regret for not having been able to reveal my views in response yours earlier. I’ve got a new browser and hope this works. Networking comes with a lot of hassles in this new city.

First of all I would like to convey to you that I respect you for your gallantry in defending depressed and distressed damsels. In accordance with your opinion I feel that those who are balanced intellectually and emotionally have the courage to ride on the white horse and come to the rescue of not only damsels but a lot of other people in distress. Only such people can save the others from committing suicide and the world needs them. If getting down the white horse to piss would stop you from saving a life then please do not get off your white horse.! LOL!

Thank you friend for all that you are !
