What is being spiritual? Is it being aware of God, realizing God or inventing God? For that matter, is believing in God mandatory for being spiritual? Spiritual thinkers and enthusiasts have always said that spirituality is the path to God and to attain God one needs to strive hard. One needs to delve deep into oneself, purify himself by abstaining from all worldly desires and concentrate on God to achieve HIM.
True, with due reverence to the postulates of spirituality as formulated by our spiritual thinkers, this is the ideal path to spirituality. No doubt about that. But where does that leave a common man or woman like me? I am not a born saint. I may not be able to lead a very austere life. Implementing the path prescribed for attaining God is very tough. In such a case, spirituality remains a matter of living room discussion for me. Nothing more than that. But does that mean that I need to end my spiritual thirst or my quest for attaining God?
God is a wonderful concept. Those who believe in Him cannot confirm his existence and those who don’t believe in Him cannot confirm His non-existence. Nobody knows the truth. We are all fighting under a blanket of ignorance. In such a chaotic state of mind what are we supposed to do? Hold on to the faith that God exists and proceed ahead in our spiritual pursuits or tell ourselves that he does not exist and stop our spiritual quests?
Maybe, God is such a debatable subject because of the way we define Him. To some, its an external entity, up there in heaven, who is judging all the rights and wrongs that people do and who we expect to meet after death. Such people try to follow the rigid lifestyles of saints to attain Him. But, if I cannot lead the life of a saint, can’t I attain God? I think I can.
Spirituality in essence is connecting to the spirit or one’s innerself-that is your conscience. Your conscience is your God. Follow it and you will attain God. There is nothing wrong with materialism and having desires. You need to have desires in this world to come up in life and more importantly to contribute in a meaningful way to the development of mankind on this planet. If I don’t desire to be rich in this world and enjoy all its comforts, I’ll have nothing to look forward to in life. I’ll be as good as being dead. The problem does not lie in having desires or being materialistic, but in the amount of importance you give to it and the means you adopt to attain it. For example, you need to eat to live, but you should not live to eat! Earning money by itself is not wrong, but earning by snatching another’s share unfairly is definitely wrong.
Do not curse a modern lifestyle for diverting you from your spiritual path. I think one’s spiritual quest should not be all that weak to be shaken by a modern life. I don’t spend long hours praying God. Neither do I abstain myself from any worldly pleasure to attain God. But, I remember Him always- even when I am in a pub. You need not put any special efforts to attain God. Love him, be good and do good, he will always be there with you. Doesn’t a beloved person always stay at the back of your mind, when you are sleeping or awake? Its something like that. Make God a part of your existing lifestyle and preferences.
A person may be a non-believer of God, but that does not mean the he cannot be spiritual. As along as you are able to connect to your inner self you are on a spiritual path.
Lastly, I request our spirituality enthusiasts to give us spirituality in a form in which we can absorb and implement. The common man cannot lead the life of a saint. Monastic views do not work. In order to survive in this world, one needs to have worldly desires. Spirituality and materialism should coexist; they should not be at loggerheads with each other. We need spirituality in a form to which we can connect easily. The true aim of spirituality should be its implementation in the everyday life of human beings. Otherwise the discourses, though of great value, will not achieve their purpose.

Yeah Budhha’s path was very practical and very enlightening.I am interested in learning Budhhist literature too.
You know Vincent, even in Hinduism, they say that you don’t have to do any complicated pujas. You just take the name of God wherever you are and in whatever condition you are. That will lead to salvation.I keep chanting the names of my guru and Sri Krishna mentally wherever I am and whenever I can. I don’t know where it will lead me to.But thank you very much for wishing that I reach salvation. That’s a very precious blessing or wish whatever you might want to call it, for me!
The true spiritual activities can be practiced while we do our daily routine jobs like traveling to and from office, while working in office or home and doing meditation in the morning and evening.
The only hurdle is finding the true guide who has seen the path and can help us like a true teacher.
It is very nice to hear from you after a long time and thanks for visitng. Yeah, nowadayas people can be spiritual while doing their routine work. And finding a good teacher is a matter of great fortune these days. I cannot even count a handful.
Only few people have that intention and have found the true teacher after searching through and enjoying the spiritual practices under the guidance.
You are very correct when you say that few people have put the effort in searching for spiritual gurus. Even I am saying that few people are putting the effort because those efforts are impractical for many people. I don’t think searching for God should be such a painstaking task. We need practices which people can easily follow.
I was born in family of believers. As a kid I believed in God. But due to many things happened in the family I started questioning the existence of God..If God could hear prayers..God would have not been so cruel to my mom and my brother who are more spiritual than me... they had to suffer a lot in life. I was neither religious nor spiritual. But life was easier for me. I wonder why they had to suffer and not me?
Thanks for visiting and the acknowledgement. Believe me Maya I have asked the same question that you have posed here, umpteen times and could really come up with no answer. When such things happen, I really feel that God does not exist or if HE does then he is highly biased. But then, just to give myself some solace, I tell myself that luck itself is an outcome of nature’s bias or as some say it is the consequence of one’s past deeds in some other life.
When you live by the ways of God,you don’t expect a smooth life because God will always let man face temptations and Hardships so as to strengthen his soul and faith ,also the world is so hostile to the believers in God because it brings everything Worldly between them and their God.
But still i sometimes ask myself..

Does God really care?
I believe that spirituality or lack of it starts with an individual,if you choose to live by the ’good ways’ of the church,Mosque or any aspect of believing in God, you are appeasing you own heart and your own God,one can also decide to live against the will of God.
So spirituality to me is a matter of having a good personal relationship with Your own God, (Some people have personal gods) it doesn’t have to look like sainthood!
It is the faith ans state of mind which makes us happy and content not the objects of the world.
A fabulous party may become just becomes unbearable and a place to leave immediately when one gets the bad news about any friend or relative.
Thus it is up to our understanding how we look at the world around us and think about it.

Thanks for thieving and sinning if you want to call it that. But as a part of my spiritual principles I believe, that intentions are more decisive than the actions themselves in deciding whether one goes to heaven or hell. Since your thieving conveys that my picture is worth thieving, I am flattered once again, means you have made me happy. So you are going to heaven!
Thanks for being the first person to visit my post and connect with my sense of spirituality.

There is so much good stuff to read and think about in this article. I think the simplest way to say what I mean would be to use YOUR well-chosen words;
I don’t really go with this,
”Spiritual thinkers and enthusiasts have always said that spirituality is the path to God and to attain God one needs to strive hard”
because there is a very strong spiritual element within my existence, and it does not involve looking for god or even knowing if there is one or not.
”God” is not essential in my quest.
This is something I could have (wish I had?) written. I think more this way....
”We need spirituality in a form to which we can connect easily. The true aim of spirituality should be its implementation in the everyday life of human beings. Otherwise the discourses, though of great value, will not achieve their purpose”
There’s my humble opinion, and thanks for putting up your very well written and organised article....
In fact I’ve copied it into ”My Photos” which means I am a thief and a sinner and that I shall probably never go to heaven LOL!!!
And, no, I’m NOT going to Confession...:D
