I believe they have been very effective for some. They have facilitated ways for couples to meet. I’ve heard of success stories. I think it’s also in the ability and level of maturity of the woman to discern.

yes Grace,

There is a fair chance of success stories also, but deception cannot be totally ruled out.

That’s right, Leena. Tragic tales outnumber the success stories. Some women end up battered, some end up in caskets. But the really well-thought out ones have a happy ending.

Very very true Grace. But I was just thinking Grace, even when you meet a person personally (not online) deception can always happen. So why blame the matrimonial sites for that. Moreover, as you imply, instead of blaming the sites one should personally verify the credentials before losing his/her heart out. If one does not do that is the site to blame?

Well, not counting on the success stories and unsuccessful stories, don’t you guys think it is quite a casual method? I mean marriage is something serious and important. I still have my qualms about it. I mean it is kinda equal to internet dating.

Yes Mayuri , I do agree with you. Although the original intention of the service providers is to provide a prospective bride or groom with a reliable connection, people are misusing it to make it casual. But I believe there must be some reliable and serious members out there… at least those who avail the services as paid members.

If I am not wrong it was John Kenneth Galbraith, that economist, author, professor in Harvard, US Ambassador to India and a wit with iconoclastic temperament wrote made a fun of popular matrimonial advertisements in Indian newspapers and their increasing graph. In the internet age and New Media, these matrimonial classified ads are being fast replaced by matrimonial sites.

Yes Anil, given the advantage of reaching out to the entire global population and ensuring fast communication, not to mention the chat facilities and the facility of allowing the other person to see how you look in the first go, matrimonial ads are sure replacing newspaper classifieds

Yes, Leena, the level of maturity that the woman or girl has will bear greatly on whether she will research about the guy or take everything he says lock, stock, and barrel.

Online dating and matrimonial sites are simply tools to meet a prospective partner. It is no different from having a friend of a friend introduce you face-to-face to a would-be-partner.

I think the problem lies in the perception of some women and girls of these sites. They think that these are the holy grail of nailing a relationship.

Blame it on the heavy advertising of these sites, as well as the testimonials of those who were benefited by these sites. :)

If not these, then it must be the slick promises of a very glib man. :):)
